“Well done is better than well said.” I came across this quote recently and I’m not sure why it had a certain resonance with me. Maybe it’s just such a basic truth that we all would do well to remember it from time to time. I suppose there are more common and current ways to say the same thing. One particularly annoying way that I used to hear it at my last job was something akin to “walking the walk not just talking the talk.” Or the old standard, “your actions speak louder than your words.” I think these are all fairly similar. But I just like the Ben Franklin quote much better. It’s simple, succinct, and it just sounds classic.
Another interesting saying that’s somewhat similar, and I can’t remember where I came across this was something like, “character is doing the right thing when no one is looking.” Or maybe it should be, “only a fool does the right thing when no one is looking.” Or have you ever heard someone say, “Would you be doing what you’re doing if your mother was watching?” Or, “Don’t do anything that you wouldn’t want to read on the front page of the newspaper.” Okay, so this one is a bit too stringent as we all do things from time to time that we wouldn’t particularly want everyone to know about. I can’t think of the last thing I did that I should be ashamed of, but I’m sure I’ve done something.
Okay, this is enough rambling for tonight. I’ve been writing posts trying to plug my website that sells science toys and after tiring of that, I spotted a book on my shelf called “Ben Franklin’s Wit and Wisdom.” Maybe I’ll pluck a few more quotes from it and write about them later. Then again, maybe I won’t.
But in the meantime, if you want some cool science kits, check out my store Atomic Elephant Toy.
