I love these kits where you chip away at a rock-like substrate to unearth a dinosaur fossil. I did the GeoSafari X-cavations a few months ago and most recently did one of the Thames & Kosmos kits with my five year old son. While the GeoSafari kit is much bigger (it was a T-rex fossil), this National Geographic/Thames & Kosmos was just as fun. My son and I did the Triceratops but you can get this kit in any of the four most popular dinosaurs: the triceratops, brachiosaurus, stegosaurus and of course, the tyrannosaurus Rex.

One of the features that makes this one of the better science toys is the great quiz cards it comes with. These are very educational and totally interesting to any dinosaur fan. Compared to some of the other dinosaur dig fossil kits out there, I give this one two thumbs up and in my opinion it is a bit better than most. Of course, I’m a big Thames & Kosmos fan and I’ve thought very highly of all their kits that I’ve reviewed so far.

Usually available for around $12, these dinosaur fossil science kits will give you a solid educational bang for the buck.
