Toy Review - GeoSafari Bug Scene Investigator (BSI)

GeoSafari is one of the trademarked lines from Educational Insights, one of the more popular distributors of educational toys. While the GeoSafari Bug Scene Investigator (BSI) is no doubt a play on the popular CSI crime/drama television series, this is a pretty cool toy none-the-less. It’s for ages 5 and up which is pretty accurate as kids much older than that would get bored with it pretty quickly. But for the youngster just getting interested in exploring the outdoors and all the critters that come with backyard science, this is one of the more valuable science toys I’ve seen.
It comes with three main parts. The Bug Patrol is a catch-and-release bug container. It’s a pretty clever little contraption with a sliding magnifier, belt clip, and air holes so kids don’t suffocate their newfound friends. The other toys in this kit are the Bug Scope and attachable Super Sleuth Microscope which are really what make this a cool toy. I found the 30x magnification suprisingly clear for viewing a couple of roly poly bugs we found in our backyard. 30x may not sound like a high magnification but you’d be surprised at what all you can see on bugs that close. Our roly polies looked like miniature armadillos. Very cool. My overall recommendation- this is a great little science kit which can usually be found for under $25.
